Frontline Plus Flea Control
Frontline Plus Flea Control is an easy to administer flea control product available for dogs and cats over the age of 8 weeks.
It kills adult fleas on the animal and also prevents the development of flea eggs, larvae and pupae in the environment.
Frontline Plus Flea Control for dogs also has an effect in killing ticks on dogs - it kills the paralysis tick for 2 weeks after application and the brown dog tick for 4 weeks after application.
Frontline Plus Flea Control remains water fast for the period of activity thus allowing bathing between treatments. However animals should be completely dry when the product is administered and should not be bathed for 24 hours after application.
This product is safe to use on breeding, pregnant and lactating dogs and cats.
Made by Merial Australia Pty Ltd, Frontline Plus comes in different formulations for dogs and cats and is available in a variety of sizes.
How to use Frontline Plus Flea Control
Frontline Plus Flea Control comes as a liquid in a pipette for external use. It needs to be applied to a completely dry animal
The tip of the pipette should be snapped off and the entire contents applied directly to the skin of the animal being treated. The hair should be parted to skin level in an area which is difficult for the animal to reach by licking. This is generally the back of the neck between the shoulder blades. The entire contents of the pipette should be emptied onto the skin at this location. You may need to squeeze the pipette several times to completely empty it. The product should not be rubbed in or combed through the coat. All dogs and cats in the household should be treated at the same time.
The interval between doses depends on the outcome which is desired from the product. In both cats and dogs monthly application will protect against fleas. In dogs, protection against the brown dog tick will also be given with monthly applications. However for prevention of paralysis tick infestation, application needs to occur every 2 weeks. Daily tick searches are still recommended. For use to control biting lice, the entire content of the pipette needs to be applied.
The correct pipette should be used for each animal being treated and the entire content of the pipette used on this animal. Protection will not be gained if an owner attempts to share a pipette between 2 or more animals. Similarly, the use of dog or cat products on the other species will not confer adequate protection.
Frontline Plus Flea Control Pack Sizes
Frontline Plus Flea Control is available in a wide range of sizes.Frontline Plus for Cats: All weights of cats are treated with the same dosage, thus only 1 size is available for cats. It is packaged in a green pack.
Frontline Plus for Dogs:Due to the vast range of weights across different dog breeds, Frontline Plus for Dogs is available in 4 different weight range sizes. They are:
- Orange package for dogs up to 10kg
- Blue package for dogs 10-20kg
- Purple package for dogs 20-40kg
- Red package for dogs 40-60kg For dogs over 60kg the appropriate combination of doses is used.
It is important for owners of growing dogs to be aware of their dog's changing weight so they can ensure that their dog continues to be treated with the product appropriate for its current weight.
Tips and Tricks for Using Frontline Plus Flea Control
Although most animals tolerate the application of spot-on treatments quite well, if your pet is not behaving it may be of benefit to have someone else offer a small treat at the time of application to distract your pet from the activity taking place. Very excitable dogs or cantankerous cats may need to be held by another person whilst the product is applied.
If your dog tends to roll in the grass after the application of such a product, taking the dog for a walk immediately after application will reduce the likelihood of it rolling in the grass and attempting to remove the product.
Any owners who are treating an animal that has access to water such as a pond should ensure that the animal cannot access the water for 24 hours after treatment.
Frontline Plus Flea Control Active Ingredients
Frontline Plus for Dogs and Frontline Plus for Cats both contain the active ingredients Fipronil and S-methoprene, but in differing concentrations.
Frontline Plus for Cats contains Fipronil 100 g/L, S-methoprene 120 g/L.
Frontline Plus for Dogs contains Fipronil 100 g/L, S-methoprene 90 g/L.
Fipronil kills the adult fleas on your pet.
S-methoprene acts to prevent fertile flea eggs being laid throughout the month and also kills flea eggs and prevents the development of flea larva and pupa.
Frontline Plus Flea Control should be stored at room temperature below 30C. The expiry date on the pack should always be checked prior to use.
Frontline Plus Flea Control Contraindications and Warnings
Frontline Plus Flea Control must not be used on rabbits. Use only on the species for which it is registered.
Frontline Plus Flea Control cannot be administered to puppies or kittens less than 8 weeks of age.
Not for internal use - for external use only.
Avoid contact with eyes - wash immediately with water.
Will irritate human skin - if contact occurs wash hands immediately.
If poisoning occurs contact a doctor or The Poisons Information Centre immediately.
